I have always believed life is a series of chances comprised of unscripted moments of time where a one-off encounter can change the course of your life. A few years ago, I was happily working solo on my freelance writing career and tending to my family. My baby-free hours were spent working in solitude, typing away furiously on my keyboard. In a twist of fate, Nina and I were brought together when our children were placed in the same Kindergarten class.
The first time I noticed Nina she was sitting alone under a tall, shady maple tree. The afternoon’s temperature hovered at 100 plus degrees, and I, like Nina, was looking to keep cool. I walked over to her and sat down. Nina immediately offered me a smile and I knew I had found a new friend.
Over the course of the school year, Nina and I talked. We shared stories about our children, our husbands, our lives, and our interests. And, within days, we had discovered a shared passion for family, food, books, and writing. A firm friendship was born.
One spring day, we were huddled together watching our children play at a birthday party when Nina first suggested I join her team. Now, I had always viewed my writing as a solitary exercise. At any given time, you would find me huddled in my office with the door closed, long after my children and husband went to bed. I had never considered writing as a joint venture. Nina told me to think about it. “Don’t rush into it,” she said, “but consider the possibilities.” So, I went home and I did think about it. And, by sundown, I realized the advantages of teaming with Nina. In addition to her outstanding writing and editorial abilities, I realized how much of an impact we could create together by collaborating and pooling our talents. Within minutes after making my decision, I was reaching for the phone.
Partnering with a seasoned writing veteran has inspired and motivated me to challenge myself and look beyond my original goals. This experience has reaffirmed my belief in unexpected opportunities and chances and to always be aware to step outside my comfort zone.
